Individual Therapy
Open-ended psychoanalytic psychotherapy for adults — the foundation of the practice, and the form of work I most often do. In person in Mar Vista, or by secure video throughout California and Massachusetts.
On the work
How I think about it.
Individual therapy with me is conversational and open-ended. You arrive, you speak about what is on your mind, and over time we begin to notice things — patterns in what you bring, in how you feel between sessions, in what comes up between us in the room. Slowly, that noticing becomes its own kind of understanding.
I do not work from a manual. I do not assign homework. I am not counting sessions toward a discharge. What I do offer is attention — careful, sustained, and trained — to the parts of your inner life that may not have had that kind of attention before.
Most of my individual clients come weekly. Some come more often. The work tends to unfold over months and years rather than weeks. That commitment is not for everyone, but for those it suits, the changes that follow are unusually durable.
When this might help
Signs worth taking seriously.
None of these on their own is a diagnosis. Together, they may be worth a conversation.
- 01
You have done therapy before, found it useful, and sense there is more.
- 02
Something keeps returning — a feeling, a kind of relationship, a familiar impasse you cannot quite explain.
- 03
You are functioning well by external measures but feel, internally, that something is off — and want to take that seriously.
- 04
You are intellectually curious about your own mind, and want a thinking partner who is genuinely qualified to be one.
What to expect
The shape of the work.
01
Consultation
A complimentary twenty-minute call. You describe what brings you. I describe how I work. We see whether it seems like a fit.
02
First sessions
Two to four meetings, in the office or by video. A wider conversation about your history, what you are looking for, and what working together might look like.
03
The work
Weekly sessions, ongoing. We meet at a set time. Over months, the rhythm and the relationship become the container in which real change becomes possible.
Begin
The first step is a conversation.
A complimentary 20-minute consultation by phone — to hear what brings you, and to see whether we might be a fit. There is no obligation.
